Entries I did for Mermay, a drawing month started by Bancroft! I’ve been toying around with a dark comic idea about mermaids for a long time, so I got to take advantage of this month to explore the type of story I want to tell in the future.
I wanted to try and shoot for dark themes, like land children fighting sea children, Land children slowly turning into children of the sea, people eating mermaids thinking it’d give them their youth (so there’s a bit of slight cannibalism there), and where all the mermaids are disappearing to.
Speaking of changes, just like I brought up how Akira killshumans before Miki’s loss and how Ryo could never bring himself to hurt animals (something Akira makes fun of, by the way- Ryo also had a pet dog he loved very much), I should bring up another concerning Ryo. In Crybaby, Ryo casually kills humans or talks about disposing of humans himself. This also never happens in the manga until he remembers his identity as Satan. What we see is him killing and fighting demons before his memories are restored.
In the Sabbath, he cuts some people with a shattered bottle shards to attract demons with blood (his human plan in the manga is to merge with a demon to fight them, alongside Akira which backfires) and both him and Akira get beaten up and the demons began to possess the party goers. He acts a bit wild and crazy (with extreme mood swings) because his mental state is pretty unhinged due to:
His possessed father tried to murder him in his sleep not too long ago.
Then his father set himself on fire in front of him revealing the existence of demons.
Also rip his beloved dog.
As they drove to the Sabbath, Akira and Ryo were attacked by a horde of demons who nearly killed them.
Ryo was pretty terrified for his life and relied on drugs and alcohol for coping, he’s smoking a cigarette laced with drugs.
Satan explained Ryo’s fear of demons was genuine and it almost drove him mad. That was the point, Satan needed to understand humans to learn their weakness by experiencing all of them himself/herself.
I’m trying to distract myself from the fact that I lost my tablet by playing the Hunger Games simulator but, like, how am I not supposed to draw this? This is good material.
Like,
All the drama is pretty accurate

A section of Norse Myth Wherein Odin turns one of Loki’s twin boys into a wolf, who then devours his brother. Odin uses the dead twin’s innards to form a chain and binds Loki to a rock with it as punishment for him having killed a favored god. The goddess Skadi then puts a venomous snake over his head, which drips venom into his eyes. Loki’s wife, and mother of the twins, goes to Loki and holds a bowl over his face, collecting the venom before it can drip onto him. However, when the cup is full, she must move it away from his face to dump the venom, and it is then it hits Loki as was intended. It is said that his writhing in agony is what causes the earth to shake.
They’re all here! I took it upon myself to create an illustration of a Mythological creature or character for every letter of the alphabet, trying to span across a multitude of cultures and creature-types. Another thing I wanted to accomplish with this project was to find some the more unusual and/or obscure creatures that don’t get as much representation in artwork. Individual Tumblr Posts with said creatures’ descriptions are below.
Again, I’ll be making this into a small run of books as a way to test the waters. If there’s more demand for a larger run, I’ll definitely be looking into it!
